                                                                              Summer Track & Field
Welcome to the Asheville Lightning Junior Olympics Team website. Junior Olympics (affectionately known as JOs) is the top youth Track & Field and Cross Country program in America and is sponsored by USA Track & Field, our national track and field organization. It is open to boys and girls from ages 6 to 18, from beginners to advanced High School level. The Asheville Lightning is one of the most respected and well known Junior Olympics teams in the southeast. Over 2000 young athletes from Western North Carolina have been members of the team since it was first formed in 1991 and many of these have been State, Regional and National Champions. The team has over 20 volunteer coaches, a dedicated administrative staff and is supported by many youth-oriented organizations.
                               Intermediate Girls 4x400 Relay
In Junior Olympics all Olympic events are contested, including Javelin, Pole Vault, Race-Walking and Heptathlon & Decathlon. Competition is only against others in your own age group, in events that you choose,  and includes 3 meets culminating in a National Championship Meet, the largest track meet in the world. Over 6,500 athletes competed in last year's National Championship meet. The summer track and field season begins this year in April and ends in early August.

Junior Olympics is an excellent opportunity to develop in an event that you are currently competing  in or to try new events. If you are a beginner, the Asheville Lightning coaching staff  will help you  to get started. For more advanced High School and Middle School athletes, this is the place to further develop your skills, and if you already a star, Junior Olympics is a great opportunity to compete on a national level.
